I figured you were a Trekkie when I saw the “4 lights “ reference in another article. I too grew up watching TNG and have fond memories of many of those episodes. I really wanted to like Discovery but between the glaring cannon issues and the in your face wokeness I had to give it up. I missed the January 6 clip when I watched the pilot but it doesn’t bother me. The USA being on the verge of a new civil war doesn’t seem far fetched right now and the covidians are a good stand in for Kahn and the eugenics. Hopefully going forward they keep the woke politics out and don’t ruin another trek show.

Sounds like you have a similar impression of mixed feelings. I didn't hate it, but maybe the subversive or not so subtle vaccine push was a bit much. I was not offended by the J6 clip but saw it as a type of signaling of perspectives. Personally during the protests that followed George Floyd's death I witnessed groups of people burning trash in the middle of the street of New York City and smashing bank and retail windows. To me that looks more like the ingredients of a Civil War than Tiki Torch Dudes 2: Someone opened the door for us. Discovery has had some great episodes but at moments it feels like they are trying to overcompensate for years when men made up most of the leading characters. I found it hard to relate to any of the characters as I did with Rios in Picard. There are certainly many episodes from earlier Trek series that explore personal struggle, but I think they expand the degree the show covers each character stylistically, which might not be that bad if the writing was more convincing.
